A Year of Reflection & a Sustainable New Year

2023 was a momentous year, to say the least. A lot has happened collectively and on an individual level, demonstrating the interconnected nature of the micro and macro. In the midst of our fast-paced lives, it’s crucial to recognize the profound impact our choices can have on the world. This year has been a transformative journey towards sustainability and (eco) consciousness, centered around the idea that, at its core, this movement is simply about love - love for nature, people, critters, culture, and everything in between. Making healthier choices for ourselves becomes a powerful form of self-care and self-love, creating a ripple effect that extends to caring for others and the planet.

A significant aspect of this journey involved a reevaluation of the relationship we as humans have with food. Understanding it not only as a source of energy and sustenance, but also as a form of pleasure; an expression of self-love. The revelation is straightforward yet impactful. Food is medicine, love, community, and culture intertwined. This realization led to an exploration of the significance of consuming seasonal, locally sourced, and organic produce.

It’s important to note that when referring to organic, the focus isn’t necessarily on the USDA certified label, but rather on choosing produce free from harmful pesticides. Numerous studies support the idea that opting for organic foods contributes to a healthier body and a cleaner environment. This deliberate act of self-love translates into a choice that resonates through communities, fostering a culture of wellness and responsibility.

Local organic grocery stores, refill stores, and farmers’ markets are a sanctuary of fresh, vibrant produce and sustainable living; a place that promotes circularity and reciprocity. The transparency offered by these spaces allow conscious consumers to trace the journey of their food from source to table, empowering them to make informed choices in alignment with their values.

Sustainable living is a holistic approach extending beyond our plates. It transcends ideals and politics. It involves making mindful choices in every aspect of our lives. Opting for natural materials and reducing reliance on single-use items creates a harmonious cycle that echoes the principles of love and reciprocity - the essence of nature.

The journey towards sustainability and (eco) consciousness has been a voyage of love - love for oneself, others, and the beautiful planet we are lucky enough to call home. Choosing healthier options at the grocery store, supporting local farmers and markets, along with embracing a lower-waste lifestyle are merely expressions of this love. As we continue to navigate the complexities of our modern lives, it is essential to remember that every choice we make has the power to shape a more sustainable and loving world for all. 💚
